30 Rock and Saturday Night Live star Tracy Morgan was left in a medically induced coma after a serious car accident in the late spring of 2014. The comedian nearly died, and the accident claimed the life of longtime friend James McNair.

The 45-year-old actor was in a luxury Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with six other people when it was hit, causing the vehicle to flip over.

Morgan’s assistant Jeffrey Millea and fellow comedian Ardie Fuqua were also critically injured.

“I started crying so hard,” he says. “Probably harder than I cried at his funeral. I just kept saying, ‘Dad.’ He was my best friend in life.”
