MONTREAL – Guests at the annual St. Patrick’s Society luncheon were treated to great music and lots of Guinness at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Montreal Thursday.
The fundraiser drew a who’s who of Quebec personalities to celebrate Montreal’s Irish heritage, including Global Montreal’s senior anchor Jamie Orchard.
Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre was this year’s honourary guest.
“I feel honoured and privileged,” Coderre said, who who proudly boasted of his Irish heritage.
The mayor said he hopes to make Dublin a twin city with Montreal and to highlight his trip to Ireland next month, a Dublin city councillor was in attendance at the Montreal festivities.
“There are preliminary discussions about friendship agreements,” confirmed Michael Macdonncha, a councillor for the Sinn Fein party.
Andrew Fogarty, 96, was honoured at the luncheon for a lifetime of volunteering.
“Man is not an island or an entity onto itself,” Fogarty said. “But if he is truly honest to himself, he owes so much to so many, and that is what happened today.”
This year’s St. Patrick’s parade will take place on Sunday, March 20.
