WINNIPEG — The world of banking can be difficult to comprehend, even more so when you’re a teen. Dakota Collegiate is trying to change that.
The school has partnered up with Casera Credit Union to help educate students on the ins and outs of banking.
After a visit to Transcona Collegiate, who already had a similar program underway, it was a no-brainer to get it started at Dakota.
Launched in November of 2015, the program is still fairly new but is already attracting grads who are business minded.
“I got told by a teacher who said that they were going to offer this program and because I’m interested in going into business I thought it would be good experience to learn about the field that I’m going into,” Grade 12 student Ashley Coss said.
Coss and fellow Grade 12 classmate Ryan Hutterer both sit on the board of directors.
“We make executive decisions,” Hutterer said. “Whether it’s promotional strategies, or teaching the students here at Dakota how to invest money.”
The Credit Union is open every day at lunch. Students can open an account and even withdraw money. Perfect for those business minded students.
“Ryan just came to Dakota this year and he’s been a great leader in the school and a great role model for the other students,” Business Technology teacher Angela Baraniuk said.
“Ashley’s actually getting her dual diploma in business ed. so this has been a great experience for her to put some of what she’s learned into action,” added Baraniuk.
