TORONTO – A rare, large-scale watercolour by Group of Seven artist Franklin Carmichael, and a Lawren Harris oil sketch of the Canadian Rockies will be among the works up for grabs at the Joyner Spring Auction of Important Canadian Art.
The May 25 sale will include Carmichael’s 1929 watercolour “Lone Lake,” one of his earliest works that has remained in the same Canadian collection for decades and has a pre-sale estimate of $300,000 to $350,000. Dominated by cool blues and greens, the landscape depicts the western end of Nellie Lake in the La Cloche region of Northern Ontario.

Also infused with blues and greens is Harris’s “Mountain Sketch VII,” which was inspired by his first trip to the Rocky Mountains in the summer of 1924. With a pre-sale estimate of $300,000 to $400,000, the work has been consigned by a private Ontario collector.
The auction will also have William Kurelek’s “After Church During Indian Summer (The Kavanagh Homestead, Bancroft),” which hails from a private Quebec collection and depicts settlers gathering for dinner on their expansive homestead. The mixed media on board has an auction estimate of $60,000 to $80,000.
The Joyner spring auction spans more than a century of Canadian art history and also includes pieces from A.Y. Jackson, Frederick Varley, A.J. Casson, Cornelius Krieghoff and Jean-Paul Lemieux, among others.
