A new tracking system is coming to B.C. to keep a tighter control on high-risk offenders once they have been released.  The new ankle bracelets will have GPS-enabled electronic monitoring, unlike old ones that required a land-line.

The old system was designed to monitor curfews and see whether or not people were home, but did not have GPS.

Corrections officials will soon be able to program ankle bracelets to track offenders. This will help ensure they don’t violate the terms of their release conditions.

“B.C. Corrections has finalized the contract with supplier Buddi Ltd. and will now complete staff training and equipment testing,” says Cindy Rose, a B.C. Corrections spokesperson in an email statement.

Buddi Ltd. is a company based in the U.K.

The conversation of having an outdated system to track offenders began after the murder of 17-year-old Serena Vermeersch at the hands of a high-risk offender who had just been released.

The man charged with her death, Raymond Caissie, was not being monitored electronically.

Rose says B.C. Corrections expects to start phasing in the new technology in mid-December.
