PENTICTON — More than 100 people took part in the eighth annual Kidney Walk in Penticton on Sunday.
Organizers say the aim of the event is to raise money for the Kidney Foundation and to raise awareness about the importance of kidney transplants and organ donation.
“We are especially thrilled to dedicate the 2015 walk to our very own local hero: Teresa Atkinson, who after a 17 year wait, is the recipient of the miracle kidney donation,” says Barb Sheppard, Penticton Kidney Walk Coordinator.
“Teresa is doing great and is recovering from her surgery at the Kidney suites in Vancouver.”
Sheppard says funds from the event help to offset the costs of staying in the Kidney suites.
Penticton is one of 25 communities across the province that hold a walk in support of the cause.
The fundraising goal of the local walk is $30,000; provincially, organizers hope to raise $450,000 for the Kidney Foundation.
