DARTMOUTH, NS – Thursday brought lots of sunshine and warm temperatures to the region, meaning a beautiful late summer day across much of Nova Scotia, but the memory of last winter isn’t far from a lot of people’s minds.
Though some folks were enjoying the last few days of summer, catching a few rays on Citadel Hill this afternoon, and maybe not thinking about winter, Payzant’s Home Hardware in Lower Sackville says some people are.
Payzant’s Home Hardware is one of many businesses that sells snowblowers, and already has some in stock.
“We had one on the floor, just sitting there for about four hours and the next thing I know, I walk by it and there it was, gone,” said Dan Shore, a manager at Payzant’s.

“So I said to the guys out back, we need to get some more down here. Sure enough, we brought some down and we sold some more this morning.”
MacFarland’s new location in Burnside has also been reporting brisk sales for snow blowers this fall.
“I think we had ordered eight or ten already and we pre-sold out of every one of those,” said Luke Donohoe. “So I started taking more pre-orders from more customers and I just ordered eleven this morning.”
Donohoe says people are wise to pre-order snowblowers adding if you wait too long, you may be in the predicament many faced last winter, no snowblowers available anywhere.
“We sold out probably the beginning of January of what we had in stock and by the time January ended, we couldn’t get a single one of them in, and we just kept getting calls for them all winter long,” Donohoe said.
With temperatures ten degrees higher than normal, Dan Shore says customers at Payzant’s are a little surprised to see snowblowers for sale.
“Some people come in and they’re a little miffed as to why they’re on the floor already, but then you get those people who believe in being too prepared is never a bad thing,” says Shore.
Donohoe says he knows the feeling of not getting a snowblower in time all too well.
“My father offered to sell me a used snowblower for a hundred bucks and I turned him down and I was kicking myself by the end of the winter,” he said.
