Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says Prime Minister Mark Carney should tell Canadians what leverage the country has over the United States in coming trade negotiations.
In an interview with The Canadian Press on Friday, Carney rejected the characterization of energy and critical minerals as “leverage” in negotiations to renew the Canada-United States-Mexico trade agreement.

But Poilievre says Carney should lay out exactly what leverage Ottawa has and what demands the prime minister will make, as Canada seeks to secure an end to tariffs and a renewal of the trade deal.
Carney says he simply views these sectors as future trade opportunities with the United States — or with other trading partners.
Earlier in the week, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer warned a group of Canadian politicians that Ottawa shouldn’t try to use energy as leverage in the trade talks.
Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said about a week ago that Canada’s energy and natural resources are “Canada’s strongest cards” in renegotiating the trade deal.

Keep drinking the Kool Aid. In no way Carney is “Statesman”. Far from it. He made huge promises and so far has not delivered on them. His Elbows Up campaign quickly U-turned after the election.
Mr. Poilievre is trying to keep himself relevant in this new universe Trump has given the world, while Mr. Carney is dealing with the reality of the situation.
If Carney told us all what our next moves should be, as Poilievre is asking, would he not only be telling the Americans as well?
Carney’s demonstrating that he’s a statesman in every sense of the word as he positions Canada for this new reality.
Thank God that he’s not just another loud mouthed politician looking for votes, otherwise Washington could become Canada’s capital.

Carney is a weak, spineless leader who has no negotiating skills. He is an arrogant banker.
Canada is in a weakened position because of policy failure of the Trudeau regime of which Carney was an advisor for many years.
The USA is 10X Canada economy and holds most of the cards. Carney being belligerent will not help the matter. This deal is about mutual interest and benefits. This is a business deal and Canadians are taking it way too personally.
