In the post Lavigne said she was delivering the news “with a heavy heart.”

The couple’s whirlwind romance began in March 2012, when Nickelback frontman Kroeger was enlisted to help with the songwriting on Lavigne’s self-titled fifth record.

They began dating in July, and became engaged that August. The two married on Canada Day 2013.

Kroeger co-wrote 10 tracks on Lavigne’s last album, produced three and co-produced four. Their duet, “Let Me Go,” hit No. 12 on the Canadian chart and also made the Top 100 in the U.S., Australia and Germany.

“Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we’ve created many unforgettable moments,” said Lavigne’s Instagram post. “We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other.”

The two have faced rumours and speculation over the years that the relationship was on the rocks, however just last month it was reported they had bought a $5.4-million mansion in California.

Both have recently dealt with medical issues: Lavigne revealed in June a battle with Lyme disease while Nickelback was forced to cancel a leg of their recent tour due to Kroeger requiring surgery on his vocal cords to remove a cyst.

This will be the second divorce for Lavigne, 30. She was previously married to Sum41’s Deryck Whibley, who just got remarried this past weekend. This was 40-year-old Kroeger’s first marriage.
