TORONTO – YouTube is known as a hot spot for cool do-it-yourself videos – but the latest DIY video to go viral is guaranteed to give you a wicked party trick.
Over the weekend, British YouTuber and tech reviewer “Mrwhosetheboss” posted a tutorial on how to turn your smartphone into a 3D hologram using an old CD case. The video has garnered over 3 million views since.
Using a simple template, you use a knife to cut out each side of the projector from the CD case. After cutting out each side, you would then tape them together to form the projector.

From there, simply load up a YouTube video designed for hologram projectors and place your homemade creation on top of your phone.
The projector is essentially a DIY-version of the Holho Smart hologram projector, which retails for about CAD$80.
This isn’t the first YouTube tutorial showing how to make an at-home hologram projector. In April, YouTube page “American Hacker” uploaded a video a nearly identical tutorial using an old CD case.
