CALGARY – An overnight party in the northwest now has police investigating a murder.
An 18-year-old was killed after a fight broke out and he was stabbed.
It happened in an apartment building that houses at risk adults.
Police were called to a Collingwood residence around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning, after reports of a man in medical distress.
When they arrived, they found a young man stabbed in the upper torso.
He was transported to hospital, where he died a short time later.
Police officers tracked down a suspect with help from witnesses and the canine unit.
Detectives were called to the scene, where they continued to interview witnesses in order to determine the type of weapon used in the attack.
The forensic unit scoured the parking lot for evidence Sunday afternoon.
The focus was a second floor apartment and its blood soaked balcony.
“All these cops surrounded, it started with all these sirens and it powered up in two minutes. Like nine cop cars, there was a fire truck and the K9 unit came by,” said Stefan Kuhn who lives in the building.
“They were coming from everywhere and very quickly they ushered us away,” neighbour Steve Miller said.
It’s believed a fight broke out during a party at the apartment.
“I’m not sure how many people were in attendance in the residence. My understanding was a gathering of some type,” Staff Sgt. Ryan Jepson said.
A man was taken into custody near the scene and the surrounding neighbourhood searched for clues.
“Search and rescue has been deployed. I’m not sure if we’ve recovered a weapon for this incident,” Staff Sgt. Jepson said.
The apartment building is run by the Mcman youth family and Community Services Association. It houses at risk adults ages 18 to 24.”
The program met fierce opposition by the surrounding community when it was approved by the city in 2009.
Police are unable to confirm if there’s been disturbances at this building before.
Neighbours say the apartment belongs to a young woman who moved in only a couple of months ago.
“It’s very scary when it happens in the area. You don’t expect that from the area at all,” Kuhn said.
Investigators say witnesses are being co-operative.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
Mcman family services declined Global News’ request for an interview.
