You no longer need a Facebook account to use Facebook Messenger

Facebook will now allow you to use its free messaging platform without signing up for an account. Handout/Facebook

TORONTO – Good news for Canadians who want to use Facebook Messenger, but don’t have a Facebook account. The social networking site will now allow you to use its free messaging platform without signing up for an account.

Starting this week, users without Facebook will be able to download Messenger and sign up using just their name, phone number and a photo.

Those who sign up using the “Not on Facebook” option will still have access to all of Messengers features, including the ability to send photos, videos, stickers and voice clips. However, you will have to rely on the contacts in your phone to find friends that use the app.

Facebook garnered a lot of criticism in August after its decision to disable the ability to send private messages through its mobile app, forcing users to download the standalone Messenger app.

Many users have also criticised the company for not allowing non-Facebook users to sign up.
