CALGARY – Twenty-three-year old Calgarian Allison Beveridge is training for the upcoming Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Beveridge will be part of the “4-women Cycling Team Pursuit” along with Kirsti Lay, Laura Brown and Jasmine Glaesser. They are a medal favourite at the Games.

Beveridge trains at the Glenmore Velodrome, where anyone in Calgary can go from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays to rent a track bike and have a coach show them how to ride on the banked oval.

I tried it today, and it’s quite the thrill! The only thing you have to get used to is track bikes aren’t 10-speed bikes – they don’t have brakes! Once you get up to speed, it’s like being on a treadmill, and when you hit the bank…the faster you go, the safer you feel.

It’s wild. Enjoy the ride!
