REGINA – A new province-wide alert system is now being launched in Saskatchewan. SaskAlert is a public program designed to alert people about emergency situations.

Reasons for alerts being issued include severe weather-related events, wildfires, hazardous material spills, train derailments, significant highway closures and evacuations.

“SaskAlert can provide critical information about emergency situations as they are developing so residents of the affected area will be able to take action to protect themselves, their families and property,” said Jim Reiter, the government relations minister.

“Having a wide variety of options available where residents can receive alerts, whether it is via smartphone, online, television or radio, we are confident that SaskAlert will help keep families and communities informed and prepared in case of emergencies.”

The province recently completed live testing of the system in southwestern communities.
