Quebec passes controversial pension reform bill

MONTREAL — The Quebec government passed Bill 3, its controversial plan for pension reform, by a vote of 85 to 28 on Thursday morning.

The vote came despite months of protest from city workers, which will be forced to make equal contributions to their pension funds to offset a $4-billion pension fund deficit.

At the moment, several municipalities contribute 60 or 70 per cent.

Bill 3 passed with just two amendments: one would help retirees when it comes to paying off the deficit and the other would facilitate more flexibility for contract negotiations between unions and the province.

The union coalition that represents 65,000 firefighters, police officers and white-collar and blue-collar workers is expected to respond at a news conference at 2 p.m.
