VANCOUVER – The Wildlife Rescue Association is calling on any Canadians crossing the border to pick up a specific brand of Dawn dishwashing liquid.

On Monday night the organization in Burnaby received nine gulls smeared in fish oil. Another one is coming in today and officials think they birds got into an uncovered container at a fish processing plant in Richmond.

All staff and volunteers will be cleaning the birds on Wednesday, but they only use a specific brand of Dawn to do so.

The centre does have some but they don’t want to run out, and are asking anyone who is going to the U.S. to pick up a few bottles of Dawn Ultra Original Scent, which is always blue.

Communications manager Yolanda Brooks says when staff use the Canadian version of Dawn they always end up cleaning the birds two or three times, but the U.S. version works immediately to cut through the oil. She says if people check on the back of the bottle, it should say that the product has been distributed in the U.S., not Canada.

The bottles can be dropped off between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. at the wildlife hospital at 5216 Glencarin Drive in Burnaby. You can also call their Wildlife Helpline at  604-526-7275 if you cannot drop them off yourself.
