Celebrities react to Joan Rivers death on Twitter

WATCH: Tributes continue to pour in for Joan Rivers

TORONTO – Celebrities and friends of Joan Rivers took to Twitter Thursday to express their sadness over the actress’s death.

Rivers, well known for her raspy voice and quick witted humour, died Thursday in New York City. She was 81.

“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” daughter Melissa said in a statement. “She passed peacefully at 1:17 pm surrounded by family and close friends.”

Rivers had been rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center Aug. 26 after she stopped breathing during throat surgery at a clinic. She was moved out of intensive care on Wednesday after the decision was made to take her off life support.

Long-time friend Larry King took to Twitter to express his grief over the loss writing, “Great guest, pal, comedian & mother. We will never see her likes again.”

Fellow comedians, including Kathy Griffin, Seth Rogan and Jimmy Kimmel, joined the scores of users tweeting about the actress.

Rivers was also quite active on Twitter, often tweeting jokes that garnered thousands of retweets.
