UPDATE: Search for armed man in Cochrane ends peacefully

CALGARY – RCMP have arrested one person after executing an extensive search for an armed man in Cochrane on Sunday.

A man wearing camouflage pants with a crossbow slung over his shoulder was spotted wandering around Highway 22 around 5 p.m.

RCMP members caught up with the man at a local skatepark in Cochrane.

They say when they approached the suspect he ignored their instructions and ran off into a wooded area.

Police later found the suspect barricaded in his residence. He was taken into custody just before 10 p.m.

“This is the best possible outcome for everyone involved,” said Staff Sergeant Roger Waidson, Detachment Commander, Cochrane RCMP. “I am sure the situation was very frightening for the citizens of Cochrane. I want to thank them for their assistance and cooperation throughout the incident.”

RCMP have charged 26-year-old Ben Laslo of Cochrane with two counts of carrying a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace.

John Williams, whose son knows Ben, says he has dealt with multiple deaths in his family over the past several years.

“It’s a very, very sad circumstance,” Williams says. “There is a lot more to it. The general public assumes all of a sudden there is a crazy guy on the loose, but don’t know the whole story.”
