Police use chopper to nab break and enter suspect

WINNIPEG – Police were able to use their helicopter to stop a break-in and arrest a suspect Friday evening.

Officers say a man broke into a business on Hangar Line Road around 6:30 p.m.

Once inside,the man allegedly forced his way into a locker and took the belongings before arming himself with what police say resembled a baseball bat and began damaging property.

The police helicopter, Air1, was near the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and was able to land in the area so officers could respond to the break-in.

“There’s certainly a level of uniqueness to this incident,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen with the Winnipeg Police Service. “We had a male who was obviously acting in a very aggressive manner. He was causing significant damage to this particular facility and the Air1 crew made a very unique decision, again, taking all things into consideration, their safety, public safety, and landed the aircraft in a safe manner… And located this individual who was cornered by staff.”

Darrell Martens, 27, has been charged in connection to the break-in.
