ST. LOUIS, Sask. – A precautionary closure is expected to be lifted Wednesday night on a Saskatchewan bridge after a crack was found last week.

Last Friday, the St. Louis Bridge on Highway 2 was closed and traffic was detoured.

Engineers determined the crack running across the bridge was caused by a corroded expansion joint mixed with the recent cold.

The bridge will reopen to one-way traffic as soon as temporary traffic signals are installed.

Only cars and light trucks are allowed across due to a weight restriction.

Repairs on north and southbound lanes are expected to start today and two-way traffic should resume within about five days.

The bridge was originally built in 1912 as a rail bridge. It was modified in 1929 to accommodate vehicles.
