SASKATOON – A natural gas leak in Saskatoon Monday evening forced the evacuation of condo residents into a cold night.

SaskEnergy says a bobcat operator clearing snow at the Prairie Heights Condo at 1416 20th St. W. hit a meter around 8:40 p.m. on a service line supplying natural gas to the building’s backup generator.

The main line to the condo was not affected.

Firefighters evacuated the building and people from the 44 suites were taken to St. Mary’s Church.

SaskEnergy shut off gas to the line and fire crews then tested for natural gas levels in the building and adjacent properties.

Tests were negative and residents returned to their homes around 10:30 p.m.

Repairs to the line will be completed on Tuesday.
