Airdrie, Alta. youth charged after middle school bear spray incident

An Airdrie, Alta., youth was charged with assault and weapons charges after a bear spray incident at a local middle school last week.

On Oct. 18, 37 students were treated by emergency personnel after bear spray was deployed during an altercation.

According to the RCMP, emergency crews responded to reports of bear spray being used in a fight at Ecole Airdrie Middle School in the 300 block of First Avenue N.E. shortly after 1 p.m.

“The altercation occurred outside, near the school, and was with a small group of youth who do not attend the middle school,” police said in a news release.

“Police are asking parents not to go to the school at this time and follow their normal student pick-up procedures,” they said.

At the time, Mounties said no arrests were made.

On Monday, Airdrie RCMP sent out a news release saying a youth was charged in relation to the incident.

The youth, who cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

They were also charged with common nuisance, according to the release.

Airdrie RCMP said they are still looking for information about the incident and asks anyone with information to call 403-945-7200 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
