Ward 1 in northwest Calgary extends east from Crowchild Trail all the way to the western city limits. It includes the communities of Bowness, Canada Olympic Park, part of Cougar Ridge (which is also in Ward 6), Crestmont, Greenwood/Greenbriar, Montgomery, Rocky Ridge, Scenic Acres, Silver Springs, Tuscany, University Heights, Valley Ridge and Varsity.
FAST FACT: Employment is slightly below average due to a large number of seniors and the thousands of students attending the University of Calgary.
Current Councillor: Dale Hodges was first elected in 1983 and is the city’s longest serving council member. He is currently in his tenth term. He is not seeking re-election.
THE CANDIDATES

His involvement in community initiatives includes organizing a campaign against a cell phone tower in Tuscany and a proposed casino near Rocky Ridge.
He also helped lobby for funding for a northwest recreation centre. He has been a regular contributor to the media online, in print and on radio.
Harper’s campaign platform includes improving city services and transportation, increasing recreational opportunities, balanced growth and fiscal responsibility.

Harper was a runner-up in Ward 1 in the 2010 civic election and the first to declare his candidacy in the 2013 election.

If elected, Sutherland says he will conduct meetings with all community associations in Ward 1 and invite feedback on critical issues using an electronic survey system. He also promises to hold open house meetings in the ward’s communities to better understand the needs of residents.

Vanderbrink has volunteered with numerous organizations including Sustainable Calgary, Clean Calgary, the Women’s Centre helpline and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Association. She sits on the board of the Bowness Community Association.
Her campaign platform includes affordable housing, social activities for children, seniors and all Calgarians, business community revitalization, prioritizing parks and open and accountable civic government.
Vanderbrink ran in Ward 1 in the 2010 civic election, finishing in fourth place.
