Abbotsford police are searching for a group of youths who were caught on camera brutally attacking a nesting goose in a shopping mall parkade last weekend.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the disturbing attack took place at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre either late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Mall security found the injured goose covered in blood sitting on its eggs and called animal rescue officials.

“The fortunate news is that despite being injured and bloody, animal rescue determined it was in its best interest to keep the goose there with the eggs,” MacDonald said. “They’ve been checking on it and it’s caring for the eggs.”

MacDonald said surveillance video captured three young males attacking the goose, but police believe more people were present at the time.

“It looked like one of the youths [was hitting the goose with] a stick and the others were gesturing as if they were throwing things at it,” MacDonald said.

Police also believe the same group may be responsible for fatally injuring another goose that was found by a security guard at a neighbouring mall this week.

“He located a severely distressed goose,” MacDonald said. “And that goose didn’t make it. We are looking to see if it’s part of the attack. It probably was one of the geese that was at the parkade and it took flight or tried to get away.”

A group of about six geese nest in the parkade every year. MacDonald said they have never had an incident like this and are looking to identify the people responsible for the attack.
