Stampede Roundup moves to new venue for 2017 concert

Organizers behind the city’s largest corporate Stampede party announced Tuesday that although they’ve set the date for next year’s event, it will no longer be held at Fort Calgary.

Stampede Roundup will be moving to a new venue in 2017, with weather risks among the reasons for the change.

“Fort Calgary has been a fabulous home for the Stampede Roundup and we have nothing but the greatest respect for the entire team at Fort Calgary,” executive producer Caitlin Boyle said in a news release. “However, we’ve determined the site is no longer compatible to our event needs.”

“With the cancellation of two large-scale events at this location in the past two years, the site no longer provides the infrastructure or site conditions necessary to pull off large-scale events in poor weather conditions.”

In addition to the weather risks, the organizers blamed the build-out of the East Village for creating a “significant increase” in area traffic as well as “new sensitivities” to running such a large event.

The 22nd annual Stampede Roundup is scheduled for July 11, 2017 at a site organizers said will be announced in the coming months.

“The safety, security and event experience for our event attendees is our top priority, and we are very excited to start a new chapter at a new location,” Boyle added.

Money raised by the event goes toward the Rotary Club of Calgary. In 2015, the event raised $225,000 for the non-profit organization.

Past performers include KISS, Journey, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, and The Tragically Hip.
