Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died following a struggle at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
Police informed the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) that the man suffered “a medical emergency and became unresponsive” after a struggle during the processing procedure Wednesday morning.
The man was then transported to Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced dead, according to an IIU news release Thursday.
No further details were released as the IIU continues the investigation.
The IIU is a civilian organization that investigates serious incidents involving police.
