‘Mind-boggling’ to claim driving while high is safe: police

A standard sobriety test is the best way to find out if someone is under the influence of marijuana, according to drug recognition experts. The problem is no one’s determined what the legal limit for the active ingredient in marijuana should be.

But experts say high drivers will show the same signs as someone who has had alcohol.

Police are reminding everyone that a driver who is high will face impaired driving charges, just like someone who is driving under the influence of alcohol.

“It’s almost this myth that if you’re impaired, particularly by marijuana, that you’re either just as safe as a sober driver or in some cases, I actually heard people make the claim that you’re safer,” said Cnst. Ian MacDonald with the Abbotsford Police Department.

“And this to me is completely mind-boggling.”
