WINNIPEG — With Jennifer Jones having already qualified for the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts as the defending champion there’s a new number one seed for the upcoming Manitoba Scotties in Beausejour.
Kristy McDonald’s foursome was voted as the top seed by fellow curlers for this years provincial women’s curling championship. It’s a first for McDonald as a skip.
“It’s a new feeling,” McDonald said. “There’s a first for everything I guess. That’s a first for me as a skip so it’s a nice feeling, it’s a compliment and a sign of respect from your competition so it feels good.”

McDonald’s rink was knocked out in the 2 vs 2 Page Playoff game in last years provincial Scotties. But she’s quite familiar with the spotlight having won the 2014 Manitoba Scotties as a third for Chelsea Carey.
“It’s an advantage because of the draw, the times are good. It’s a confidence builder. I think it might give us a little extra skip in our step going out. I’m not too worried about it being a pressure thing. I’ve played under bigger pressure than that so it’s not a big deal.”
The 2nd seed is Kerri Einarson’s team and maybe the third time will be the charm after finishing as the runner-up in back to back years.
“We’ve made it to the final the last two years and getting into that atmosphere and playing that great in that facility, start off fresh and play well.”
Barb Spencer is seeded third followed by Michelle Montford and Darcy Robertson.
The Manitoba Scotties run from January 20-24 at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour.
