UPDATE: Missing Montreal taxi driver’s van found, search of canal turns up empty

MONTREAL – The family of a Montreal taxi driver has been without news of their loved one since Dec. 21.

Si Belkacem Silakhal, 52, has not been heard from since Monday Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. when he called a family member while driving his cab. His car is described as a 2012 black Dodge Caravan with license plate number T11-310F and taxi number McGill 1482.

The 52-year-old father and husband has not been seen or heard from since.

Police found Silakhal’s van on De la Commune Street, near Nazareth Street in Old Montreal along the Peel Basin on Monday afternoon.

Police say there were no unusual marks on the vehicle but are doing a thorough analysis of the van.

Parks Canada drained portions of the Lachine Canal to allow officers to search the waterway.

The search continued into the early morning of Tuesday.

Silakhal, 52, was last seen wearing a grey fleece, dark pants and black and grey runners.

Of Algerian descent, Silakhal has brown eyes, greying brown hair. He weighs 187 pounds and stands 5’5″ tall.

The Algerian community in Montreal is also rallying to find Silakhal and were the first to spread the word of his disappearance.
