MONCTON – The riding of Moncton Riverview and Dieppe is red once again. Newcomer to politics Liberal Ginette Petitpas Taylor captured the riding by defeating conservative Robert Goguen by a health margin.

Goguen says it’s been a long campaign but she is thrilled with the win.

“People have told us loud and clear that they want change and we have to respect their choice and I guess their message in the Maritimes is loud and clear,” she said.

Petitpas Taylor says she’s spent the last 11 weeks knocking on thousands of doors in her riding to explain the Liberal platform.

“I think that our message really resonated with people,” Petitpas Taylor said.

Conservative Robert Goguen arrived at the Liberal headquarters to congratulate Petitpas Taylor in person. Goguen was elected in 2011 for the first time in more than 20 years and was defeated today after serving only one term.

“All the candidates really ran a great campaign it was very positive. There has to be a winner and I was fortunate that it was me.” said Goguen.

Petitpas Taylor said Goguen offered his congratulations and that the time has now come to move on.

Petitpas Taylor was greeted last night by a large crowd of family, friends and supporters. She thanked her family and her husband for their support, including her older sister Maria Drisdelle.

“I am feeling overwhelmed but I knew the results were going to be this was because Ginette is a really hard worker, she has always been like that,” Drisdelle said.

Petitpas Taylor’s long time friend Claudette Goguen worked with her at the Codiac RCMP where Petitpas Taylor has been Victim Services Coordinator.

“Ginette is such a caring person and she is a wonderful person and I wish her all the best for Moncton Riverview and Dieppe she is going to do a great job,” she said.

When asked what her first priority would be in Ottawa, Petitpas Taylor said “we certainly want to make sure that being accessible to the citizens of Dieppe, Riverview and Moncton is certainly a priority.”
