Thousands without power as high winds down trees, hydro lines

WATCH: Strong winds knocked down power lines and residential fences across the GTA Monday night.

High winds downed trees and had knocked out power for thousands of people across southern Ontario Monday night.

As wind gusts reached up to 100 km/h in some locations Monday night provincial police were warning of numerous instances of trees knocked down onto roadways — and a GO Transit train out of Toronto was held up by live wires on the tracks.

Environment Canada had issued a large part of southern Ontario from Windsor to Kingston under wind warnings, cautioning about driving conditions and highways exposed to cross winds.

Provincial police were also calling for caution, warning of a construction sign blown onto a stretch of Highway 407 during rush hour and traffic lights gone dark from power outages.

Toronto Hydro had reported that, as of 8 p.m. about 10,000 customers were affected by power outages, mainly in the west and central north parts of the city. Crews had been dispatched.

Thousands of hydro customers saw the lights go out as power lines were brought down by tree branches, and some weren’t expected to get power back until noon tomorrow.

Winds are expected to ease up by Tuesday.
