Budget discussions begin at City Hall

CALGARY – City council members will begin the tough task of tackling the budget on Monday.

The budget earmarks $22 billion of spending over the next four years.

Each of those four years starts with a proposed property tax increase of 4.7 per cent.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says that adds up to about an extra $6 a month, but councillors have already began looking for areas to trim the budget to possibly bring that number down.

There’s also the option to reinvest any of those savings.

“Given the citizen satisfaction survey we got last week, people are really telling us to invest more in transit and roads,” explains Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “My guess is that if council finds savings, they may wish to reinvest them in those two areas.”

“My sense is there’s not an appetite from council to have it go up though.”

Council has set aside the next two weeks to focus on the budget.
