  • The Toronto Maple Leafs will drop the puck on the 2014-15 season with their home opener tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. The highly anticipated start of the National Hockey League season will be celebrated in Toronto with various events across the city.
  • Police are searching for suspects after a home invasion this morning in Toronto’s north end. Two men burst into a home on St. Lucie Street near Weston Road and Finch Avenue West just after 4 a.m.
  • Ontario police are advising drivers to follow road and traffic rules ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend. As of Oct. 5, the Ontario Provincial Police have recorded 216 road deaths with 168 of them attributed to the so-called “Big Four”: distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and lack of occupant restraint.
  • Conservative MPs in the House of Commons led by Prime Minister Stephen Harper voted late Tuesday to join the war in Iraq, passing a controversial motion that clears the way for Canadian CF-18s to embark on airstrikes in the Middle East.
  • Americans Eric Betzig and William Moerner and German scientist Stefan Hell won the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday for developing new methods that let microscopes see finer details than they could before.
