Toronto golf courses in the rough, but open for business

TORONTO – The conditions are far from perfect but Toronto’s public golf courses are now open for the year.

All five courses thoughout the city were busy to start the season Good Friday.  The cost for each varies but all are offering special discounted twilight rates until April 30.

Grey skies greeted players as they arrived for 18 holes at Humber Valley Golf Course.  Enthusiast Tayler Erb was eager to start the season.

“Whenever it’s open [I] like to come out with the boys and have a good time,” he said.  “There’s never a bad day to golf.”

The hard winter forced the courses to open a couple of weeks later than normal this year.  The fairways aren’t as green as they might normally be and there are plenty of puddles where water hazards aren’tusually found.  Maintanence crews are said to be hard at work, making sure things are up to par in the near future.

“They do try and winterize it for the most part,” said Humber Valley’s head golf pro, Michael Dale. “We did have a lot of ice damage on the fairways due to that winter we had.”

Instructors are available for those who might need some help getting back into shape.

“It was okay today actually,” said Robert Clarke. “The back nine was better than the front but it’s still a work in progress.  We’ll see how the rest of the summer goes.”

His golf partner, Daniel Gomes, was willing to admit it his score wasn’t what he had hoped it would be.

“It was a little rough, trying to get back out there [and] get all the winter rust off but it was a lot of fun.”

Golfers can call the courses directly to book tee times.
