Police say a Cambridge man is facing 12 charges related to human trafficking, sexual assault and firearms.

For Melissa, the last thing she imagined starting her first year at Western University, with plans to become a lawyer, was to become a stripper, let alone fall victim to human trafficking.

LAWC was receiving funding through the Measures to Address Prostitution Initiatives (MAPI) fund, a five-year program that ended in March 2020.

A lawyer for the defence says the ruling is unprecedented in regards to the relatively new prostitution laws.

An initiative is being developed to raise awareness of human trafficking and institute training for hotel employees in Saskatchewan.

"This has been a hidden epidemic in Nova Scotia," said MacFarlane, who was surprised by the statistics.

The Liberals previously called for the Harper-era prostitution laws to be repealed. But nothing changed after they took office.

A dozen men – between the ages of 19 and 52 – were arrested for obtaining sexual services for consideration, and 12 vehicles were seized for prostitution offences.
