U.S. President Donald Trump is hitting the campaign trail as Republican candidates across the country face tough races in the midterm elections, and he has fallen back on a familiar target – Canada.
During a campaign rally in Arizona on Wednesday, Trump revived his rhetoric on wanting Canada to be “51st state” of the United States.
“They’ll end up being the 51st state, because that’s the only way it works,” Trump told the crowd at his rally.
“We don’t need them, but they need us,” Trump said, adding that Canada would be “doing something just like Greenland.”
This was an apparent reference to an Arctic security agreement Trump signed with Denmark and Greenland last month, paving the way for more U.S. bases in Greenland and easing tensions over his repeated calls for the vast island to become part of the United States.
Trump’s comments came as U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra said American officials are “closely watching” Canadian politicians for signs of election interference ahead of pivotal midterm elections next month.
“Keep your nose out of American politics,” Hoekstra said during a podcast interview.
Hoekstra was referring to an anti-tariff ad paid for by the Ontario government and Industry Minister Melanie Joly’s comments that Canada’s counter-tariffs would target specific U.S. states.
Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Joly denied the claims that Canada was attempting to interfere in American politics.
“We’ll never do that and we’ll never accept that also being done to us in Canada,” she said.
Canada and the midterms
Polling shows Republicans trailing in several key races, including in states bordering Canada where Trump’s trade war with Ottawa has become an election issue.
“Canada is being put on the table,” said University of Ottawa political science professor Emily Regan Wills.

Nowhere is that more evident than in Michigan, the heart of the American auto manufacturing sector, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers narrowly in most polls in their U.S. Senate race.
Rogers has attempted to put some distance between themselves and Trump’s trade policies, urging an end to the trade war with Canada.
He said in his debate with El-Sayed that he’d urged the White House privately to reach a trade deal with Canada and end the president’s tariffs. Canada is Michigan’s largest trading partner, as it is for many Great Lakes and Midwestern states.
Days before, Rogers unveiled a new ad in which he said, “We know that Canada is not our enemy. We need to end the tariff war — now.”
That’s a noticeable departure from Rogers’ earlier, less specific statements praising Trump’s “America First” economic agenda while saying tariffs are not a “one-size-fits-all” solution.
“Americans in border states are used to being able to interact with Canada,” Wills said.
“Visiting, vacationing, shopping, that’s all being profoundly disrupted at this moment.”
In Maine, another state hit hard by Canada’s retaliatory tariffs, veteran Republican Susan Collins is trailing narrowly in most polls behind Democrat Troy Jackson.
During a debate, Collins touted her ability to remove certain items from Trump’s trade war with Canada, including pulp, concrete and road salt. Jackson pushed back by quipping “we can’t eat road salt.”
Why is Trump doubling down?
While prominent Republicans in tight races seek to distance themselves from his rhetoric, Trump is doubling down.
“I truly think this is psychological, this is not strategic. Donald Trump’s response to being told ‘no’ is to go harder,” Wills said.
For Republicans, Trump’s rhetoric might do more harm than good in border states.
“It would be great for other Republicans if he would stop talking about it. The issue is that nobody has yet discovered how to get Donald Trump to stop talking about something he wants to talk about,” she said.
“He doesn’t really have an ‘off’ button or ‘maybe that’s an inside thought’ button,” Wills added.
Trump’s own approval rating was at 37 per cent on Thursday, remaining steadily low for several months leading up to the midterms.
Trump’s renewed rhetoric around Canada’s sovereignty is likely intended to create a “rally around the flag” effect that is “supposed to make Americans feel embattled,” she said.
Whether that works is less clear.
The comments also come as U.S. inflation accelerated last month as gasoline and many other goods and services became more expensive. The consumer price index rose 3.7 per cent in September compared with a year ago, the Labor Department said Wednesday, up from 3.4 per cent in August.
Some experts suggest Trump may be trying to shift the burden of high prices from himself to other targets, including Canada, but it may not connect with the voters as it has in the past.
“The American people are paying more and getting less because of the choices of Donald Trump,” said Todd Belt, professor of political management at George Washington University.
“You can’t out-message the economy. People get angry when you tell them that things are good and they know how much money they have at the end of the month,” he added.

Elbows up, TDS on full display below!
Do not join Trump’s US. He means to take all he can of what Canada has. He will be the “bully” that he portrays. Stay strong & always stay independent, Canada. Canada has everything Trump wants & cannot get in the US. Do not give in to this not-well-meaning man or Canada will be very sorry & our children & grandchildren will suffer the loss of Canada to Trump. Once taken by the US it will be impossible to take Canada back, please be very aware. Canada is “our home & native land for all Canadians, especially the native Brothers!”
There’s a perfect 1:1 correlation between how ignorant a person is and how certain they are about a particular topic. Only a fool is emotionally attached to his beliefs.
Joining the largest union of states and most wealthy, powerful and democratic nation on Earth as the 51st state, and Canadians are like: “Oh the horror”…
DUH
Because he loves when everyone jumps every time he opens his stupid mouth. If you want to hurt him just ignore him.
Trump just wants a 51st state so the number of states matches the number of women hes sexually assaulted and number of girls hes hired at Epsteins parties and number of times hes fondled Ivanka and Tiffany
When Trump speaks, it is the same rhetoric over and over again. At his age, he can only retain very little, so he goes on and on with the same talking points.
It’s not unusual for a bitter old man and that’s what he has become.
He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed ….or the drawer.
Trump and his other dogs..keep nipping at the ankles of anyone or any country they choose…
TO BAD THEY REFUSE TO UNDERSTAND..
THAT DOG DIED LONG AGO…
I hate the media for building this man’s ego. He wasn’t so bad the first time when he was a joke and everyone treated him as such. Now, the media clings to his every word, trump has been the news for the past 6 months. I wonder what will happen when he gets votes out, the news will have to find something else to beat to death just like when covid was over.
Impeachment, should American people have the stones.
This will soon be over and finally he can be put out to PASTURE.
Along with all the others.
I feel bad for EVERY AMERICAN…BUT YOU VOTED EH
Little boy why you so sad…you crazy..you lost…do you have a small pee pee lol
I hope that most Americans are much smarter then Donald Trump and realize that they are being gaslighted by this egotistic, narcissist buffoon.
I’m always happy to discover new opportunities! ❤️ Thanks for sharing this with us. 🙏

Trump trying to keep his boy Carney popular so they can dismantle Canada together and take the bounty.
@1231am, only idiots are carnhole dck swallowers like yourself
As if Trump is going to change his rhetoric or not talk about something because of an upcoming election that he is not running in.
They don’t know Trump very well and have to get experts to guess why Trump said something. Lol present day news is idiocracy.
They keep saying the consumer price index and affordability are the main things on the ballot, but that has never been an issue in any other election until now.
Prices were not a problem before Carney’s election while Canada has higher inflation and we pay more for everything and more taxes.
Cause he’s ridiculously desperate and needs to rile up his idiot base….as reflected in some of the braindead comments here!
Trump’s gonna take a dump down carnhole’s throat
Trump sh*ts out turds smarter than any liberal
the orange turd
Nobody anymore listens to these stooges….
the people in these comments that are going super soft on trump here are the same people you see on every other article crying about ‘le west has fallen… canada is a 3rd world country… carney bad cause x or y’. They’re bots at best, at worst they’re ameriboo kucks 4 trump. and this is coming from someone who absolutely loathes the liberals.
Trump & Hoekstra warn Canada about interfering in U.S. politics but they seem to have no problem openly interfering in Canada’s.
Time for him to go before the firing squad! Not really worth a bullet but cheaper than tariffs! Sad person with no brains! Loser, felon, rapist & Putin & Epstein’s buddy!
@ 9:14 Anonymous – Trump’s ignorance of the economics of tariffs has cost American households thousands of dollars a year. Most hospitality wage earners don’t earn enough money with tips to pay any tax on them. He’s bribing them with nothing of value.
Trump has taken taxes off of overtime and tips. What has carney done to actually help Canadians save money?
Canada should seize Alaska, that will show Trump who’s boss.
Clownada and the United S*hole deserve each other
Should the orange one come even close to an election victory then everyone knows the results are fictitious
@ Roy stephenson – Trump does not care what Americans think. He certainly is not doing this to wind Canadians up. Check your ego at the door. It’s not all about you.
@ nacho business – Remain has consistently polled above 70% but now it’s only goping to win because it’s rigged.
The tiny, loud, contrarian, cranky minority can take their performative outrage and f … ind somewhere else to live.
@ jerry st amour
NO sitting US president since George W Bush in 2002 have won the midterms including your hero Obama who lost them twice !!!
It’s a foregone conclusion but keep believing your ragtime liberal press.
WHY ?
Because he knows it winds some Canadians up. Specifically the Elbows up crowd who let’s face it struggle using the intelligence they were born with when it comes to TDS.
they both should keep their big mouth shut. they know they will lose the house and the senate on November 3 but they cannot accept that it is their doing and now they are trying to pass the blame on somebody else after they get obliterated in the midterms
President Trump knows the referendum vote will be rigged and the only way the west can escape the liberals plans for the destruction of canada is if Alberta, Saskatchewan and the interior of BC ask for an intervention.
When the Republicans don’t perform in the midterms they will blame Canada.
He needs to die. Never 51!
…everyone knows trump lies. FULL STOP. The indies and the sober republicans are FINALLY getting tired of it This, combined with the economy in shambles, is enough to move the needle to the Dems. It’s like that loud mouth at the end of the bar, you get tired and you leave shaking your head.
He really doesn’t realize the joke he is.
Because Liberals paid him to?
When Trump loses, Liberals fall as he is the deflection to all of their failures.
pot calling kettle black?
The orange one is out of control. All his lunatic rhetoric is about distracting from Epstein. The closer it comes to the Epstein files release, the more his insanity will be on display for all to see. He is a danger to us all and Americans will not be safe either.
Who cares but Liberals about to lose their only deflection?
No one…
Maga Moron!
No bots. Very interesting.
Yawn…..
haha wont happen. Canada is proud never bend to his demands
The hat has the correct letters.
U STUPID ASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get lost you Orange Maggot! What a tool.
Trump’s fight with Canada is unpopular in the US. A smart man wouldn’t mention it until after the mid terms.
The orange gas bag is easy for Carney to score points off. Carney’s approval rating is about to rise again.
How about Alaska becoming the 4th territory of Canada? They are closer to Canada than the Contiguous USA?
Trump is yelling “Squirrel” and pointing into the distance. Anything to take the focus off him and the issues.
Just ignore Trump, never going to happen.
