The child is an 11-year-old boy, Calgary police told Global News.

The intersection of Royal Oak Drive NW and Royal Terrace NW was blocked off by police as of 9 a.m.

Personal items — like a bag, clothing and shoes — were visible at the scene of the collision.

Police said impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The driver stayed at the scene, CPS said.

Police escorted the ambulance to hospital.

Area resident Raj Sandhu was getting her eight-year-old son ready to be picked up by the school bus when the collision happened near her home.

She didn’t hear the collision when it happened but went to the scene when a fire truck pulled up.

“There was a little child and then everybody was just around him,” Sandhu said. “And then by the time I came out with my child, because I had to walk him down the street, I think there was the mom or somebody just crying really badly.

“So I had to walk a few kids down the street not to see anything.”

The area was closed off by police tape and pylons.

Sandhu said the intersection can get busy in the mornings and that, with a lot of vehicles parked along the street, it can be tricky to see kids coming out from between parked cars.

More to come…
