York Regional Police have released surveillance video of a black Audi smashing the front doors of Vaughan Mills mall, driving through the mall and out another set of doors.
Police said the break-and-enter happened just after 1 a.m. Wednesday when a black 2011 Audi A4 with Quebec licence plate X10 SNP drove through Entrance 6 of the mall.
The video appears to show the car driving through the glass doors and then around the mall in a series of edited together camera angles. It then shows the Audi exiting through another set of glass doors at Entrance 1, police said.
Sgt. Clint Whitney said two suspects in the car made their way to an electronics store where they allegedly “broke into the store and then proceeded to take a quantity of electronic devices.”
The video released by police does not show the active break-in of the electronics store.
Whitney said they both got back into the Audi and drove through the mall before escaping through another mall entrance. The car was last seen on Jane Street, he said.
“Fortunately, nobody was harmed in this incident. Nonetheless, it’s an audacious crime and remarkable,” Whitney said. “It did look like they were going shopping in that vehicle.”
He also said the Quebec licence plate on the vehicle had been reported stolen and a search was underway for the suspects.
Whitney said there doesn’t appear to be a significant amount of damage inside of the mall but noted both entrances and the electronics store that was robbed are damaged.
In an update at around 4:40 p.m., police said the vehicle had been located, adding that it will be examined for evidence.
