Winnipeg police say investigators have “exhausted all investigative avenues” eight years after the hit-and-run death of Cody Joss as family continues to call on anyone with information about the cold case to come forward.
Joss was killed at the corner of McGregor Street and Inkster Boulevard while walking home from work on Dec. 19, 2014.
The 21-year-old was hit by a vehicle heading west on Inkster Boulevard as he crossed the intersection around 6:45 p.m. He was walking northbound on McGregor Street when it happened.
The driver sped off before police arrived. Joss was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
At a press conference with police Thursday, Joss’ father, Kevin Joss, said the family remains desperate for answers.
“I’m here to plead to the person, or persons, that may have info on what happened to my son that fatal night,” he said.
“It’s not too late – any little bit of information that you have can really help us out.
“We need to know what went on and we need to start healing.”
In a media release police said investigators from the central traffic division have “exhausted all investigative avenues, and the incident remains unsolved.”
Constable Aaron Staples, who is leading the investigation into Joss’ death, said while the case remains open, police need help.
He said to date police have not been able to find video of the crash and no witnesses have come forward.
“Our investigators have not been able to follow up on any of those direct (investigative avenues) and have, instead, had to rely on external tips and follow-ups,” he said.
“We’re hoping that this message can get out … it could make all the difference in the world for the family.”
Staples said 2022 has been a “terrible year for road fatalities,” with 41 crashes involving death or serious injuries reported so far this year.
Joss said hearing about another fatal crash or hit-and-run is still difficult for him, his family, and those who loved his son.
“Every time someone else loses their life or is critically injured or leaves the scene, it sends such a ripple effect through to this family, and to others, that are going through the same things that we have,” he said.
“The thoughts of the next person that’s going to lose their life to an accident that could have been prevented – by making the right choice – it’s enough to make us tear up.”
