The Calgary Police Service is investigating two separate serious vehicle collisions that occurred on Thursday and early Friday morning.
Around 5:48 a.m. on Friday, Calgary police tweeted the intersection of Métis Trail and Airport Trail N.E. is temporarily closed and asked drivers to avoid the area until further notice.
In a release later that evening, police said a Chevrolet Express van, driven by a 39-year-old man, was travelling eastbound on Airport Trail at the same time a Hyundai Sonata was travelling north on Métis Trail. The Hyundai was occupied by a 22-year-old man and a 33-year-old man, police said.
Officers said the Hyundai struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet Express and the driver of the van was ejected through the passenger side of the vehicle and out onto the roadway. The Hyundai came to a stop on the shoulder of the left turn lanes of westbound Airport Trail.
Police said the driver of the Chevrolet Express was transported to hospital where he remains. The occupants of the Hyundai suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
An EMS spokesperson told Global News on Friday morning that the driver of the Chevrolet Express was in critical, life-threatening condition.
Police said are speed, traffic signal violations and alcohol are being looked at by investigators as possible factors in this collision.
Meanwhile, CPS is also investigating another serious two-vehicle collision that occurred on eastbound Stoney Trail S.E. near 52 Street S.E. on Thursday.
Police said a 2007 Ford truck was stationary in the far-right lane of eastbound Stoney Trail S.E. while waiting for a tow truck when a grey 2013 Volkswagen Jetta struck the rear of the truck.
The Volkswagen then caught on fire and the blaze spread spread to the truck. The driver and the passenger of the truck — both men in their 40s — were not injured, according to police. Police said the driver of the Volkswagen, a pregnant woman in her 20s, suffered a miscarriage as a result of the collision.
Police said speed, alcohol and drugs are not beinconsidered factors in this collision.
