TORONTO — Canadian pop star Justin Bieber treated his fans to a new song Sunday, releasing the track “Heartbreaker” on iTunes and his official website just before midnight.
Without mentioning ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, Bieber said he was going through a heartbreak when he wrote the song.
“It means so much to me to be able to share what I was, and still am going through, with my fans,” he said in a message posted online. “I’m very proud of this song and I hope it give (sic) my fans some insight into my heart.”
On Twitter, the 19-year-old Ontario native added: “I still believe in love.”

More than a dozen songs titled “Heartbreaker” have been recorded, including Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” in 1969, Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” in 1979 and Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker” in 1999.
Bieber’s idol Michael Jackson included a song called “Heartbreaker” on his 2001 album Invincible.
Bieber plans to release a new song every Sunday at midnight until Dec. 9.
“Each week the songs get better,” Bieber tweeted to his 45.5 million followers. “Maybe u might get lucky with two songs in a week.”
Bieber, who performs Monday in Japan, wraps up his current tour Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia.
