Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a rainfall warning for southeastern Saskatchewan effective Thursday heading into Saturday.

Regina and the southeast part of the province are expected to see steady rainfall throughout the first half of the weekend, and could see between 30-60 millimeters according to Environment Canada.

Sean Osmar, the manager of communications for the Water Security Agency, said the southeast region of the province will be hit hardest with rain into the weekend.

“In the southeast where we saw those two late winter storms not too long ago, plus the addition of rain last week and this week, so conditions in that area are pretty wet,” said Osmar. “With all of this combined, the potential for some localized flooding is certainly there.”

With flooding potentially occurring, Osmar wants to remind the public to be careful when dealing with water.

“Don’t try and cross any fast moving water, especially if you cannot see or know the depth of it,” said Osmar.

And while the rain is good for dry conditions across Saskatchewan, some farmer’s seeding will continue to be pushed back because of the wet soil.

“As long as it continues to rain, I don’t think it’s a good idea to get some of this equipment into the field,” said Osmar. “So get that out of the field and wait for the poor conditions to change (or) dry up before they can get back out there.

In addition to the heavy rain, strong winds gusting as high as 80 km/h will be possible Friday as the storm moves north from the United States into Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
