Pedestrian in serious condition after being struck by vehicle in downtown Calgary

One person was transported to the hospital in serious condition after being struck by a U-Haul vehicle in downtown Calgary Tuesday morning.

Calgary police were called to the intersection of 1 Street and 12 Avenue S.W. for reports that a truck had struck a pedestrian at approximately 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to the Calgary Police Service, the U-Haul truck drove up onto the sidewalk, struck the pedestrian and a pole, knocking over the pole. Enmax was also on scene.

The U-Haul was rented, but police said they have not identified the suspect and are working to determine whether the driver was the same person who rented the vehicle.

Police said the suspect fled on foot east on 11 Avenue S.W. He is described as a man between 45 and 50 years old, about five-foot-ten, balding with dark hair. He was wearing blue jeans and a green sweater with a white T-shirt underneath.

The victim remained in hospital Tuesday afternoon in serious, but stable condition, police said.

Emergency crews remained at the scene Tuesday afternoon while the intersection was closed. A CPS spokesperson told Global News streets around the intersection will also be closed while police investigate.
