Toronto police say a 47-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a TTC bus in Scarborough on Monday.
Emergency crews were called to Finch Avenue East and McCowan Road just before 11 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian-involved collision.
“A 47-year-old male pedestrian was struck by the bus and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Toronto police traffic services media relations officer Sgt. Murray Campbell said.
“Toronto police reconstructionists have attended the scene and are conducting their investigation. The goal here today is to gather all the evidence to determine the factors that occurred today and what caused the collision.”
Campbell said witnesses reported that the bus was travelling east on Finch attempting to turn right to go south on McCowan.
No other injuries have been reported.
Campbell said the bus driver was a 45-year-old man.
“Unfortunately there’s not a lot I can say except to express our deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told reporters.
“Obviously it’s an incredibly traumatic experience for anyone to be going through, including our employees. So our thoughts are with the victim’s family and our employees as well who are going to get some counselling and they’ll get some support….
“Obviously days like this are incredibly traumatic for everybody and we’re going to now fully co-operate with police as they do their investigation to determine exactly what happened.”
Green said the bus involved was on the Finch Express route.
He said there are cameras on the bus and added that the footage will be downloaded and given to police.
There is no word on whether there were passengers on the bus at the time of the collision, but Green said it is a busy route and he expects that there were people onboard.
Anyone with information who hasn’t spoken to police is being asked to contact investigators.
