It’s the thing that dreams are made of for a young, classically-trained musician: performing on stage with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.

Two former Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra members are making that dream a reality in a weekend filled with performances.

“It’s like a dream come true,” said cellist Holly McCallum.

Every year the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra is invited to perform next to the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. However, due to the pandemic they could not safely perform together.

Instead, only nine youth members were asked to join the performance called Musical Siblings.

“When you’re working with someone who just had so much more experience and much more expertise than you, when you get to [perform] with them it’s just like this osmosis. It just lifts you up and it shows,” said Rosemary Thompson, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra director and conductor.

“To see the potential and the possibilities of where you can grow as an individual, so for the students it’s a really important part of our program.”

Sweetening the deal for the cellists, they get to live their dream with their best friend.

“Just the fact that I get to play with [McCallum] beside me is so reassuring and calming to me because I have performed with her so many times,” said Zeng.

“I really know how to play with her so I feel like we just connect on a different level when we play.”

Musical Siblings will tour the Okanagan. It lands in Kelowna Feb. 11, Penticton Feb. 12 and in Vernon Feb. 13. Tickets are still available, and it will also be streamed online.
