High River gives green-light to flood mitigation projects

CALGARY- Two months after a devastating flood tore apart High River, the town has given the green-light to a number of flood mitigation projects.

Earlier this month, town council recommended a number of projects to the province, to try and prevent future water damage.

The plans include:

-Designing the northwest berm at the northwest Highwood River Bank to a higher standard, so it can cope with a larger high water event.
-Extending the connection berm between the northwest berm and the Highwood River Park, and provide armouring by using coarse rock for strength and stability.
-Repairing and modifying the town dike for a larger high water event
-Intiate land negotiations to construct berms on private land.

The mayor says those are all priority projects to ensure the long-term safety of the community.

Hundreds of homes and businesses were affected during the June flood, and many have since been determined uninhabitable.
