In southern Saskatchewan, Environment Canada initially said Wednesday a hot air mass will spread across the region this week. The agency said slightly cooler temperatures will bring an end to the warning-level conditions on Friday in the southwest, officials said.

On Thursday, another heat warning was issued in Saskatoon and other areas of the province for temperatures reaching 32 C combined with overnight lows near 16 C. Warnings have since ended in many areas.

As of Friday, heat warnings still exist in Estevan, Carlyle and Pelican Narrows areas for one more day with temperatures in the upper 20s or low 30s.

Environment Canada said a cooler airmass will move in on Saturday, and temperatures will return to normal seasonal values which will bring an end to the warning level conditions.

Taking precautions

Officials are cautioning people to watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

People are advised to drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty and to stay in a cool place.

Older family, friends and neighbours should be checked on to ensure they are cool and drinking water.

Anyone looking for advice on health risks, symptoms or precautions associated with heat-related illness should contact the Saskatchewan HealthLine at 811.
