A man jailed at the Regina Correctional Centre has died after being found unresponsive in his cell.
The inmate was declared deceased at approximately 8 a.m. Thursday morning, according to a press release from the provincial Ministry of Corrections and Policing.
“We will not be providing any details around the circumstances of the death,” the ministry said in an email to Global News.
His death is not related to COVID-19, the ministry says.
Cells are checked regularly through the night and the ministry is doing an internal investigation “to ensure that proper policies and procedures were followed,” it said in the email.
The Saskatchewan Coroners Service and RCMP are also conducting investigations.
The man’s family has been notified. His name is not being released at this time.
The ministry says there have been no other deaths at the Regina Correctional Centre this year.
