Annual Queen’s Plate takes over Woodbine Sunday

TORONTO – And they’re off! Or they will be Sunday at Woodbine Racetrack. The historic Queen’s Plate will showcase jockeys competing in the 154th race for the million dollar prize.

The industry recently faced some uncertainty after the province decided to withdraw funding.

“It’s been a year of change and hardship and it takes a resilient group like ours to endure that type of transformation but frankly where we find ourselves one year later is in a position to be much more hopeful about what the future looks like,” said President and Chief Executive officer of Woodbine entertainment Nick Eaves.

This year’s field and start positions of the twelve competitors was announced Thursday.

“This is what we work for, this is why we get up at 4 a.m. and work seven days per week, to hopefully be in this position so it’s very exciting and would mean an awful lot,”  said trainer Rachel Halden of the horse “Nipissing.”

“It’s the pinnacle race of Canadian racing so hopefully we can do well in it, it would be over the top to win, it would be great,”  said Steven Bahen, jockey of Nipissing.

Post time for this royal tradition is 5:38pm on Sunday July 7th.
