CALGARY – Canada Day celebrations will be held in downtown Calgary on July 1st – despite recent flooding which paralyzed the city.

Shaw Millennium Park (10 a.m. – 11 a.m.)

Celebrations begin at 10 a.m. at Shaw Millennium Park – where there will be food and live music performances.

Organizers will be hosting a ‘living flag’ – those who want to take part can register at 10 a.m. Participants (only the first 3,000) will be given red and white t-shirts, and will assemble to form a giant Canadian flag.

Once in place, participants will sing “O Canada.”

Stephen Avenue (11 a.m. – 11 p.m.)

Celebrations at Stephen Avenue begin at 11 a.m.

There will be food, games, activities and performances from musicians.

Olympic Plaza & Municipal Plaza (1 – 5 p.m.)

Aboriginal culture will be showcased at Olympic Plaza and Municipal Plaza starting at 1 p.m.

Calgarians can partake in music and dance at the exhibition powwow and experience Aboriginal cuisine.

Fireworks (about 10:45 p.m.)

Enjoy a fireworks display from the Centre Street Bridge at approximately 10:45 p.m.

The City has identified several locations where the fireworks can be viewed:

  • Nose Hill Park
  • Shaganappi Park
  • Max Bell Arena
  • Valley View
*Note: Memorial Drive (from Edmonton Trail to 10 Street NW) and Centre Street (from 7 Ave N to 2 Ave S) will be closed to all traffic from 7 p.m. Monday, July 1 until 1 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
